What Are Beetles?

With two sets of wings and bad vision, the beetle can be a pretty easily identifiable insect. Some people consider this insect a pest, while some consider them helpful creatures. There might be several thousands of species of beetles known to man, but there are just a distinct few found in the United States. These would be the Ground Beetle, the Powder Post Beetle, and the Longhorn Beetle. These critters also vary in color, habits, and size, making them even more difficult to eradicate. To do so, you’ll need to understand everything there is to know about these critters and the threat they pose.

Why Are Homes Infected With Beetles?

Beetles just like other insects need several necessities to survive. They need food, shelter, and water. While these creatures usually feed on plants, some species do feed on wood and can do tremendous amounts of damage to wooden structures. The Powder Post Beetle is one such species that feed on wood. They’ll feed on any wood structure, including furniture, porches, decks, and patios. Despite this, most of the time these critters don’t like to venture indoors. Most of the time, you will only find these beetles inside when they are seeking shelter from the upcoming winter months. They’ll usually take up residence in the walls facing the sun.

Are Beetles Dangerous?

All in all, most species of beetles are considered a nuisance more than anything else. This is because they have a propensity to invade homes and buildings, seeking shelter from the winter. This means you’ll only find them in the home during the fall and right at the start of winter. However, you also learned that some species eat wood. This means they can cause severe damage to wooden structures. Other than that, that’s about the extent of the threat they pose.

How Do You Eliminate Beetles?

Despite what you might believe, beetles can still be hard to eradicate from a property. Although they only take up residence to ride out the winter, they do not build nests in the walls. Instead, they do what is known as aggregating. This allows them to stay mobile and quickly adapt. If forced from one section of the wall, they can quickly venture to another section and thrive on little to nothing. As you can imagine, this makes getting rid of them extremely hard.

All that being said, beetles do not want to be in the home. They are only there because they have to be. When most people spot them in the home during the summer months, it’s because they’re waking up from hibernation and trying to make their way back out. Sometimes it just takes giving them a helping hand back out to get rid of them.

Can I Eliminate Beetles Myself From My Property

If you read the above information, you know that beetles are only in your home or building because they have to be. It’s not that they want to be there, but more that they have to do there. They are riding out the harsh elements of the winter months. Of course, that doesn’t mean they’ll be easier to eliminate. If anything, it means they’ll be harder to eliminate, especially if you are trying DIY methods and chemicals. It is possible to just vacuum the bugs up and then dispose of the bags in a sealed trash can where they can’t escape and make their way back into the home.

Some people also use pesticides to combat these critters. That being said, you have to be careful with over-the-counter chemicals. This is because they aren’t as effective as the ones the pros use. They don’t contain all the necessary chemicals needed to successfully kill these bugs. This is why it is always best to opt for professional treatment when dealing with beetles.
